|
Available in PDF and Publication National telephone survey (June 2009) asks Americans how they see neighbors “struggling to make ends meet,” what they’re willing to do about it, and what locally elected officials should do to reduce poverty long term. State findings for Minnesota.
National results and findings for 7 additional states within the Northwest Area Foundation’s region are available individually, or you can order a set of all 9 findings (national + 8 states). See “related items” below. Data from the survey show how far-reaching the effects of the economic recession have become for Minnesotans. Many families are facing cuts in work hours and job losses, particularly those without a college degree. One in four have had trouble paying for basic needs such as housing and food. A majority has seen an increase in the number of people struggling in their community. Despite hardships they are experiencing and seeing around them, data suggest Minnesotans remain hopeful. Looking to the future, a majority is optimistic about the national economy, and feels the number of people struggling in their community can be reduced. Many Minnesotans are already helping out friends and family – giving money and shelter to people in their lives who are struggling. They are willing to do more, but also want elected officials to take more action to help people who are struggling.
